Highlander Rail Trail Preview Ride

May 24

The Friends of the Highlander Rail Trail are organizing a group bicycle ride on Sunday, May 24th.

This ride will follow the rail corridor along portions of Norma Rd, Straight Fork Rd, and New River Hwy. The details will depend on the size of the group. Please email Doug Ferguson ([email protected]) if you have interest in joining the ride.

The group will take the opportunity to view the corridor and check out a few of the historic features, although we will not ride on the corridor. We are working to develop multiple “showcase” sections of the corridor in the short term for group rides such as this, but these are not quite ready. If you would like to volunteer manpower to help develop these sections, also, please email Doug.

Some other news about the Highlander Rail Trail:

The rail corridor has been railbanked!!! The agreement between RJ Corman, the Trust for Public Lands, and the National Surface Transportation Board to operate an interim trail was reached at the end of April. This was the first big step towards securing the future of the rail trail.

Our efforts now turn towards fundraising. Our goal is to raise the purchase price of the corridor so that we may officially transfer ownership by early 2027. If you would like to take a larger role in fundraising please contact us at: john.mccracken@echoesoftnrail.org or virginia.bruce@echoesoftnrail.org
